Power and Control
Abusers frequently use abusive and violent behaviors to gain and maintain control over their partners. Very often, one or more violent incidents or outbursts are followed by other types of abuse that are less easily identified. However, these tactics allow abusers to firmly establish a pattern of intimidation and control in the relationship.
This Power and Control diagram was developed by survivors to outline their shared experiences in abusive relationships. Though the diagram does not include every tactic or behavior used by abusers to gain power and control, it is inclusive of many survivors’ experiences.
